By Aisha Howie
I am originally from New York City, growing up in the Bronx and later living in Queens. Since college, I have worked in the nonprofit sector, beginning as an intern supporting NYC public high school students in securing paid summer internships. I went on to manage programming for over 500 students across the city, many from backgrounds similar to my own; first-generation immigrant families, single-parent households, and families living paycheck to paycheck. My goal has always been to be the support I wished I had during my formative years.
My connection to Long Island began through my partner, who has lived on the East End most of his life. After relocating here last summer, I was drawn to the Trust because of its mission and impact. Conversations with local residents highlighted the growing challenges of overdevelopment and its impact on the environment and wildlife. Being part of an organization actively working to address these issues felt like a natural fit and gave me the ability to give back to my new community.
While I will always be a city girl, I’ve come to deeply appreciate the beauty, wildlife, and sense of community out east. I am proud to contribute in any way I can to protecting Long Island for future generations. In my free time, I enjoy dancing, live music, and arts and crafts.
We are happy to have Aisha on the team, you can send her a warm welcome at AHowie@PeconicLandTrust.org.
