A family farm like no other
In 2012, actress, filmmaker, and philanthropist Isabella Rossellini donated to the Trust a conservation easement on 20.8 acres of land in the Hamlet of Brookhaven – part of a 27-acre farmstead she acquired earlier that year – and which would become Mama Farm.
Today, overseen by executive director, Elettra Wiedemann, Mama Farm aims to foster the next generation of environmental stewards through education and preservation of biodiversity which come to life through its member CSA (community supported agriculture), and one-of-a-kind programming such as avant-garde films, theater, workshops and children’s activities.

In the spirit of Ms. Rossellini’s Italian heritage, Mama Farm is designed to be like an Italian piazza, a vibrant place to share knowledge and inspire one another toward the common goal of preservation and rejuvenation of mother earth.
At the time of the conservation easement donation, Trust President John v.H. Halsey said: “Ms. Rossellini’s conservation of this property is truly a gift to the Brookhaven community. The potential existed for this to become another subdivision. Now it will join other conserved farmland and open space in the area and become a working farm that will serve the local community.”
“Always my intention in purchasing the property was to conserve the property and to establish an organic farm there,” said Isabella Rossellini back in 2013. Ms. Rossellini has had a home in Bellport Village for 25 years and has been involved in other environmental/conservation projects in the Town of Brookhaven, including the conservation of the adjacent 9-acre preserve with the Town, Suffolk County, and the Post-Morrow Foundation. “My interest in purchasing the property, and establishing an organic farm, is to do something for my community. I see my role as helping to make this farm financially sustainable by using my business experience and providing another place for access to local food.”
