About
Nestled along Georgica Cove—an ecologically significant part of the Georgica Pond watershed—a 5.5-acre portion of the historic Cove Hollow Farm now flourishes as protected meadowland. Acquired by the Peconic Land Trust in late 2025, the property expands a growing 18-acre corridor of conserved land, creating a contiguous sanctuary that safeguards water quality, enhances wildlife habitat, and preserves the iconic scenic character of East Hampton.
“This was an important acquisition given how unique, desirable, and developable parcels like these are in today’s real estate market,” said John v.H. Halsey. “From a conservation perspective, these parcels are invaluable for their impact on water quality, biodiversity, wildlife habitat, and scenic enjoyment.”
The property will be incorporated into an ongoing land management plan focused on invasive species removal and the restoration of native maritime grassland habitat. Stewardship efforts will include reducing phragmites along the shoreline and reestablishing native plants such as asters, goldenrod, milkweed, dogbane, and bayberry. Continued mowing will help manage woody growth and maintain a healthy upland buffer that reduces runoff into Georgica Cove and Georgica Pond while supporting birds, pollinators, and other wildlife.
According to the Town of East Hampton Planning Department, the parcels contain wetlands that are part of the larger Georgica Pond wetland system, a critical natural resource for protecting the pond’s water quality. Located within an officially designated Scenic Area of Statewide Significance, the wetlands provide important ecological benefits, including filtering pollutants before they enter Georgica Pond and creating a significant vegetated buffer that supports the long-term health of Georgica Cove and its surrounding waters.
The Trust’s partnership with the Town and Village of East Hampton, alongside the Friends of Georgica Pond Foundation and numerous private donors, helps ensure that this delicate watershed and its sensitive habitats remain protected for generations to come.
