Return Visit with the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers

On March 18th the Peconic Land Trust hosted a follow up visit with the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers as part of our Connections programs. Many of our program attendees were returning to the Kelp Farm for the second time. Our first visit was last October wherein the group ‘planted’ the kelp seedlings out into the cold waters where they thrive through the winter. Read last year's article.
On this return visit, our attendees got to see how the kelp is faring now that the winter waters have thawed. It was inspiring to see the growth and learn how kelp can improve water quality. While the harvested kelp makes amazing fertilizer, the primary goal of the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers is to improve water quality and steward the land and water, a joint effort with many incredible organizations across Long Island. This theme of interconnectedness rang throughout the program, as both those who ventured into the water and those who stayed on the shore found connection and community in one another, the land, and water. It was an incredible day full of shared knowledge and passion.
Thank you to the Shinnecock Kelp Farmers for hosting our visit!
