Meaningful Impact | Niamuck Land Trust
February 13, 2026
With a Board comprised of five enrolled women of the Shinnecock Nation, the Niamuck Land Trust was founded in November 2021 to purchase, preserve, and protect sacred ancestral lands on Long Island. Niamuck grew from the work of the Shinnecock Graves Protection Warrior Society (SGPWS). In January 2021, Peconic Land Trust, working with Southampton Town and SGPWS, protected the most sacred land to the Shinnecock people: Sugar Loaf Hill in Shinnecock Hills, Southampton. The Trust is working with Niamuck and SGPWS on the restoration of the land along with additional conservation projects in the area. It is the intent of the Peconic Land Trust to transfer ownership of Sugar Loaf to the Niamuck Land Trust. The Trust served as Niamuck’s fiscal agent until it received its IRS determination letter in 2024. We continue to provide ongoing advice and guidance to Niamuck Land Trust's Board as requested.
