Exploring the South Fork | High Point Preserve

Donated to the Trust in February 2003 by Maggie de Cuevas, the nearly 50‑acre High Point Preserve forms part of an impressive 600‑acre expanse of protected woodlands. It connects seamlessly with the neighboring Accabonac and Silver Beech Preserves, all of which lie along the historic Paumanok Path.
This hilly landscape is a rich mosaic of pitch pine, oak, beech, hickory, and maple forest—an ideal sanctuary for wildlife. Its diverse habitat supports migratory species as well as many of New York State’s protected birds. The preserve takes its name from its breathtaking high‑point vista, a reward that makes the trek especially memorable.
Visitors can experience the view firsthand by starting at the trailhead and kiosk on Stony Hill Road, just east of Accabonac Road. The protection of this remarkable landscape was made possible through the generosity and vision of our friend Maggie de Cuevas, whose support ensured these acres will remain wild for generations to come.
