The Care and Cultivation of Orchids
Bianchi-Davis Greenhouses, 286 Doctors Path, Riverhead
NEW: Both the 10:00 am and 11:30 am programs are SOLD OUT
Learn how fun and easy it can be to own orchids! Meet Mark Davis in the greenhouse for a hands-on workshop about orchid care. Mark will teach us how to create the best environment for orchids to thrive, how to encourage successful re-flowering, and provide tips on propagating your orchid. Hear about the business of greenhouse floriculture and understand their families’ efforts to conserve their lands. All participants will receive a baby orchid to take home.

Birdhouse Building Workshop
Quail Hill Farm, Deep Lane, Amagansett
Bring the family to the farm for a fun-filled morning creating nesting boxes for our feathered friends. You will assemble a bird house from pre-cut materials, and learn more about ways to attract songbirds to your backyard. Take home your birdhouse along with a wealth of information that is sure to interest fledgling birders of all ages!

Composting and Seeding at the Farm – a two-part series
Quail Hill Farm, Deep Lane, Amagansett
Its time to start the garden! Roll up your sleeves and work side by side with Scott Chaskey, who has farmed at Quail Hill for 18 years, to plant a variety of seeds, including tomato, pepper, lettuce, broccoli and herbs in the greenhouse. While at the farm, learn the basics of composting, how to create a fertile soil mix, and tips on enhancing your own home garden activities!
All participants are invited to return on May 17 to transplant the seedlings into the fields of Quail Hill Farm.

KeySpan Nature Walk with Mary Laura Lamont
Hallockville Museum Farm, 6038 Sound Avenue, Riverhead
This event is SOLD OUT.
Meet Mary Laura Lamont, local naturalist and birding expert, for a 2-mile walk through some of the trails at Hallockville and the KeySpan property, searching for migratory birds and other signs of Spring! During the walk, learn about the successful, cooperative effort that resulted in the conservation of this 525-acre Sound-front landscape.
Please bring your birding scope or binoculars and wear sturdy shoes.

Forest Ecology Hike of the Mulvihill Preserve

Celebrate Earth Day with us! We’ll hike along 3 miles of trails in the beautiful Mulvihill Preserve with Laura Smith, Town of Southampton Land Steward, and observe signs of the changing season. Learn about the conservation of this precious woodland, the flora and fauna that make it special, and enjoy a breath of Spring air! Easy to moderate terrain.

"Open Space II " Exhibition featuring the artists of Plein Air Peconic
Ashawagh Hall, Springs Fireplace Road, East Hampton
Join us at the beautiful Ashawagh Hall for an enjoyable evening of art, conversation, and libations! Meet the artists of Plein Air Peconic for an "Open Spaces II " exhibition and hear of their experineces painting and photographing the serene North and South Fork landscapes, many of which were conserved with the assistance of the Peconic Land Trust. Included in this exhibit will be both plein air and studio works from the artists of Plein Air Peconic.

Family Day at Fort Corchaug
Downs Farm Preserve, Main Road, Cutchogue
Meet Dave Lombardi, Master Naturalist, and Tipi Ted from the Wilderness Training Museum, at the Ralph J. Solecki Visitors Center at Downs Farm for a two-part program. Children will learn about the Native Americans of Fort Corchaug and enjoy a hands-on craft project with Tipi Ted, while Dave guides adults on a woodland hike through the trails. Hear the stories told by the "voices of the forest," the trees, rocks, trails, and animal inhabitants of this land. Tipi Ted will guide the children on a shorter hike to meet parents, and all will learn of the Native American influence on this historic site, conserved through the work of the Peconic Land Trust and the Town of Southold.

Plein Air Peconic -- "Meet the Artists" Reception
Quogue Library, Quogue Street, Quogue
Plein Air Peconic, a collaboration between the Peconic Land Trust and local artists, begins its second year of the traveling exhibition of landscape art at the Quogue Library. Please join us as we celebrate our collective accomplishments, meet the artists, and learn more about the Trust's commitment to land conservation on the East End. All works are available for sale, and a portion of the sales benefits the Trust.
The artists of Plein Air Peconic include: Casey Chalem Anderson, Susan D'Alessio, Terry Elkins, Aubrey Grainger, Gail Kern, Michele Margit, Gordon Matheson, Joanne Rosko, Eileen Dwan Skretch, Tom Steele, Kathryn Szoka, and Ellen Watson
The exhibit will be at the Quogue Library from May 2 through May 29. A special reception with artists and the Trust will be on May 3 from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm. Refreshments will be served at the reception.

Kayaking on Scallop Pond
Scallop Pond Road, Southampton
Join us in a kayak tour of some of the most beautiful conserved saltwater marshes in the Cow Neck area of Southampton. Graham Hawks, the Trust's South Fork Land Steward, will guide us through the tidal wetlands of Scallop Pond and talk about the natural features found in this area, conserved during the Trust's 25-year history. Kayaks and equipment will be available for rental by Amagansett Beach and Bicycle Company.
Limited space available, pre-registration and pre-payment required. Single kayaks, $50, double kayaks $70, triple kayaks $90. If you bring your own kayak/equipment, $10/person. Call with your credit card to reserve your space today! Moderate to heavy rain cancels.

Stewardship Day at Thornton Smith Preserve
North Fork Stewardship Center, 22600 Main Road, Cutchogue (meeting place)
Spring has sprung, and there's much to do! Become a land steward for the day by joining our volunteer work crew. Meet at our North Fork Stewardship office at 9:00 am to carpool to the site for a morning of trail clearing and general clean-up at the preserve.
Please bring your clippers and work gloves, and wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants and work shoes.
Light refreshments will be provided for all.

Transplanting Seedlings at the Farm
Quail Hill Farm, Deep Lane, Amagansett
We are transplanting our seedlings from the greenhouse! Work side by side with Scott Chaskey, the Trust's Quail Hill Preserve Manager, as we move tender seedlings into the fertile soils at the farm. Help you children gain new appreciation for tasty fresh vegetables as they dig in the earth and plant this year's vegetable and herb crops. Learn the benefits of home gardening, how to cultivate the soil to encourage strong growth and, along the way, gather the wisdom of Scott's many years of organic farming experience.

The Conservation Story of Southold

Join Tim Caufield, Vice President of the Peconic Land Trust, to hear about the Trust's successful efforts with the community to conserve the heritage of the North Fork. Learn firsthand about a variety of land conservation initiatives that have successfully protected working farms and natural lands in Southold Town, and of the variety of tools employed to help preserve our community's special sense of place.

Fiddle Fun at the Farm

Winemaker's Tour and Tasting
Wolffer Estate Vineyard, 139 Sagg Road, Sagaponack
Join us in a personal vineyard tour and discussion with Roman Roth, recipient of the 2003 East End Food and Wine "Winemaker of the Year" Award, by the American Sommelier Society. Hear Roman's perspective on wine-making and get the real story about the business of viticulture on the South Fork. Observe up-close the various types of grapes grown, how they are pruned to enhance fruit production, and learn of the environmental factors that must be considered in producing their award-winning wines. We'll finish our visit with a trip to the cellars for a delicious tasting!

From Milk to Cheese -- a Visit to the Mecox Bay Dairy Farm

Bats: Up Close and Personal
North Fork Stewardship Center, 22600 Main Road, Cutchogue
Meet scientist and bat expert, Bill Schutt, for a fascinating evening discussion about the biology and behavior of our local, and not-so-local, bats. We will talk about ways to encourage bat populations in your neighborhood for their use as a natural mosquito control, as well as explore some of the reasons why bat populations are declining in New York. Bill will set up a mist net in the hopes of collecting, examining, and releasing a bat specimen or two. For those wishing to learn more about Bill, his work with bats, and details about his soon-to-be-released book, visit his website at www.darkbanquet.com.
